Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about resizing photos and signatures for Indian government exams.

SSC portals are very strict about photo specifications. The most common reasons for rejection are:

Wrong dimensions — SSC CGL and CHSL typically require exactly 200×230 pixels for photos. Even 199×230 can get rejected.

File too large — The photo must be under 50 KB (sometimes 100 KB). High-resolution camera photos are usually 2–5 MB, which is far too large.

Wrong format — Only JPEG (.jpg) is accepted. PNG, WEBP, or other formats will be rejected.

Background issues — The photo should have a plain white or very light background. Patterned, dark, or cluttered backgrounds are not accepted.

Use our Photo Resizer with the "SSC CGL" or "SSC CHSL" preset to get the exact dimensions and file size right in one click.

Most government exam applications — including SSC, UPSC, and IBPS — accept signatures in either black or dark blue ink. Both are generally fine.

However, a few specific notifications may state "black ink only." Always check the official notification for your particular exam cycle. If it doesn't specify a color, either dark blue or black will work.

Tip: Avoid using a gel pen that creates uneven ink flow. A ballpoint pen gives the cleanest scan. Sign on clean white paper with good lighting for the best result when you scan or photograph it.

UPSC typically requires a recent passport-size photograph, meaning it should have been taken within the last 6 months. This is a common requirement across most government exams in India.

The photograph should accurately represent your current appearance. If you've significantly changed your look (new glasses, different hairstyle, beard change), it's best to get a fresh photo taken.

For UPSC Civil Services, the photo should be 350×350 pixels, between 20–300 KB, in JPEG format, with a white or light background.

No, absolutely not. All resizing and compression happens entirely within your browser using JavaScript and the HTML5 Canvas API. Your images never leave your device.

We don't have any server-side image processing. There is no upload, no storage, and no transmission of your photos or signatures. You can even use this tool offline once the page has loaded.

For full details, see our Privacy Policy.

Some quality loss is unavoidable when you resize an image — this is true of any tool, online or offline. However, our resizer uses high-quality bicubic-like resampling (via the Canvas API), which keeps the result sharp and clear.

The biggest factor in quality is JPEG compression, not the resizing itself. When a file size limit (say 50 KB) forces heavy compression, the image may look slightly softer. You can use our quality slider to find the best balance between file size and visual clarity.

Tip: Start with the highest-resolution source photo you have. A photo from a phone camera (3–12 MP) will resize much better than a tiny thumbnail image.

For SSC CGL, the typical photo requirements are:

Photo: 200 × 230 pixels, max 50 KB, JPEG format, white background.

Signature: 140 × 60 pixels, max 20 KB, JPEG format.

These specs are consistent across most recent SSC CGL notification cycles. However, always verify the exact requirements from the official SSC notification for the year you're applying, as they can occasionally change.

Follow these steps to get a perfect signature image for IBPS:

1. Sign on a clean white sheet of paper with a black or dark blue ballpoint pen. Keep the signature within a roughly rectangular area.

2. Take a clear, well-lit photo of your signature (or scan it). Crop tightly around the signature — remove excess white space.

3. Go to the Signature Resizer tab, select the "IBPS / Banking" preset, upload your signature image, and click "Resize Now."

IBPS typically requires 140 × 60 pixels, under 20 KB, in JPEG format. Our preset handles all of this automatically.

Yes, completely free. There's no charge, no sign-up, no subscription, and no hidden limits. You can resize as many photos and signatures as you want.

We built this tool because we noticed students struggling with photo formatting during exam registrations — often paying ₹50–100 at a cyber café for something that should take 5 seconds. This tool fixes that.

Yes. This tool works in any modern mobile browser — Chrome, Safari, Samsung Internet, etc. No app download is needed. The interface is fully responsive and touch-friendly.

Simply open the site on your phone, select a preset, upload your photo directly from your camera or gallery, and download the resized result. It works identically to the desktop version.

Almost all Indian government exam portals accept only JPEG (.jpg / .jpeg) format for photo and signature uploads. A few newer portals may also accept PNG, but JPEG is the safest bet.

Our resizer automatically outputs in JPEG format when you use any exam preset. If you upload a PNG, WEBP, BMP, or GIF image, it will be converted to JPEG during the resizing process.

Our resizer automatically adjusts JPEG compression quality to meet your target file size. In almost all cases, it will produce a file within the limit on the first attempt.

If the result is still slightly over, use the quality slider that appears after resizing — drag it to the left to reduce file size further. The file size updates in real time so you can see exactly when you're under the limit.

You can also try the "Reduce File Size" tab if you just need to compress an image without changing its dimensions.

Most exam authorities require a recent photograph taken within the last 6 months. This is because the photo is used to verify your identity at the exam centre — it needs to match how you look today.

Using an old photo risks your identity not being verified during the exam, which can lead to being barred from the hall. It's also a violation of the application terms in most notifications.

Bottom line: Get a fresh photo taken. A well-lit selfie against a white wall, cropped to passport proportions, works perfectly well.
